Police have arrested one individual following a shooting incident that left the Chief of Adanse Dompoase, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, injured during a funeral ceremony in Obuasi.
According to a statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, the incident occurred on Saturday, November 29, 2025, when a musketeer’s firearm was accidentally discharged during the event. The Dompoasehene of the Adansi Traditional Area was struck by a stray bullet and subsequently transported to the hospital.
“The Police intervened promptly and arrested the suspect, 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with investigations,” Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene confirmed.
The chief was injured while exchanging greetings with the Omanhene of Asebu Kwamankese and other traditional leaders during the funeral of the late mother of Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin. He has since received medical treatment and been discharged.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that the incident underscores the importance of the temporary nationwide ban on firearm use at funerals and traditional ceremonies.
“The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries, and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” he stated. “Adherence to this directive is essential for maintaining order and safeguarding the well-being of all attendees.”
The Council called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to preserve peace, enhance safety, and uphold the rule of law across the region.
