Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu had a bittersweet experience in AS Monaco’s 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw against Cypriot side Pafos. Despite scoring an unfortunate own goal late in the match, Salisu was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
The incident occurred in the 88th minute when a header from Pafos substitute Mons Bassouamina struck the post and deflected off Salisu into the net, denying Monaco a likely victory.
However, the former Southampton defender’s overall contribution to the game was exceptional. Salisu won 9 out of 10 aerial duels, blocked two shots, and was dribbled past only once throughout the match. He also completed 54 of his 59 passes and touched the ball 76 times, showcasing his composure and skill despite the late setback.
Salisu’s strong performance was especially significant as it eased concerns about his fitness following his absence from Ghana’s recent friendlies against Japan and South Korea due to injury.
Looking ahead, Salisu is expected to feature for Ghana in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having previously represented the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup.
