Reports claiming the death of veteran Nollywood actor Lere Paimo circulated widely online on Saturday, causing concern among fans and members of the Nigerian film industry.
Viral Claims Announce Death of Film Legend
Paimo, popularly known as Eda Onileola, was rumoured to have passed away at the age of 86. The speculation intensified after celebrity journalist and Chairman of the Best of Nollywood Awards, Seun Oleketuyi, posted on Instagram that the actor had died, describing him as a “strong man” who survived two strokes.
“Chief Lere Paimo (MON) is dead. Baba died at age 86. A strong man. Baba survived stroke twice. May Baba’s soul rest in peace,” Oleketuyi wrote.
The announcement quickly went viral, prompting an outpouring of shock, sadness, and tributes from fans and colleagues who feared the loss of one of Yoruba cinema’s most revered figures.
A Prolific Career in Yoruba Theatre and Film
Born in September 1939 in Oyo State, Paimo has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning more than six decades. He began acting in 1958 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group before joining the Duro Ladipo Theatre, where he featured in notable productions such as Obamoro. He later gained national prominence with his iconic portrayal of Soun Ogunola in Ogbori Elemosho.

Shortly after the false reports gained traction, the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (ANTP) officially dismissed the rumours, confirming that Lere Paimo is alive.
Fans, colleagues, and admirers across the country have expressed relief following the clarification, while many urged the public to verify information before sharing, especially concerning public figures.
