Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has claimed that his past treason charge was linked to incidents involving fellow party members Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and Samuel Abu Jinapor, asserting that he was merely defending the NPP at the time.
In an interview on Spear FM, Agyapong recounted an event in which Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and Samuel Abu Jinapor were reportedly assaulted in Kantamanto. He expressed frustration that no other party member had the courage to address the matter publicly. According to Agyapong, he took a stand by condemning the attacks and issuing a warning to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I told them that if Kantamanto is their stronghold and they use that to beat NPP MPs, then Ashanti Region, which is our stronghold, could also be used to retaliate,” he explained. “The media twisted my words, and I was charged with treason for defending the party.”
Agyapong also questioned why his political rivals in the NPP’s flagbearer race fail to acknowledge this part of his political history when discussing his character. He emphasized the sacrifices he has made and the significant financial resources he has invested in the party since 1992.
“The money I’ve spent on this party from 1992 till now is substantial. None of the other aspirants have invested in the NPP like I have,” he asserted.
The NPP flagbearer hopeful further urged that the internal contest should not devolve into personal attacks but should instead focus on selecting a leader capable of leading the party to victory in the 2028 general elections.
“The question is simple: do we want just a flagbearer or a leader who can win? If the NPP wants victory in 2028, then I am the one the grassroots want,” he declared confidently.
Agyapong’s remarks add further intensity to the ongoing flagbearer race, fueling discussions on loyalty, leadership, and the internal dynamics of the NPP as it looks toward future electoral challenges.
