Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has accused Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of pretending to be injured in order to allow Pep Guardiola to deliver tactical instructions during City’s 3–2 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Manchester City went into the break with a 2–0 lead after goals from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol. Leeds responded strongly in the second half, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulling one back before Lukas Nmecha equalised on the rebound after his penalty was initially saved by Donnarumma.
Incident Sparks Dispute
Shortly before Leeds levelled the match, Donnarumma requested medical attention. During the pause in play, Guardiola gathered his outfield players to issue new tactical instructions in response to Leeds’ change of shape.
Speaking after the game, Farke said the intent behind the stoppage was “obvious,” noting that while the act may fall within current regulations, it raises questions about fairness.
“It’s within the rules, so I can’t complain,” Farke said. “But if you can fake an injury to conduct an additional team talk, I don’t think it aligns with fair play. It is for the authorities to find a solution.”
Guardiola Responds
Guardiola, in an interview with BBC Sport, acknowledged that Leeds’ tactical adjustments caused his side significant difficulty. However, he noted that City regained control late in the match, culminating in Foden’s 91st-minute winner.
Leeds Remain in the Relegation Zone
The defeat leaves Leeds 18th in the Premier League and extends their losing streak to four matches. Despite the result, Farke said the performance should instill confidence in his squad as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.
Leeds will next face Chelsea and Liverpool at Elland Road before travelling to Brentford and later hosting Crystal Palace.
