President Bola Tinubu on Saturday met with the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to review ongoing security operations in the North-West, including the recent rescue of schoolgirls abducted in the state.
Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Governor Idris said discussions focused on the “successful rescue” of students kidnapped from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area on November 17.
“I thanked Mr President for his leadership and decisive action in ensuring their safe return. His unwavering support and commitment to the security of Kebbi State are truly commendable,” Idris wrote on his official X handle.
He also expressed appreciation to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for coordinating the rescue mission.
According to the governor, federal security and intelligence agencies mobilised immediately on President Tinubu’s orders, leading to the rescue of the abducted girls on November 26. The students were formally handed over to their families at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
Saturday’s meeting comes amid renewed concerns over rising kidnap-for-ransom incidents across the North-West and North-Central regions, where armed groups continue to target schools.
On November 17, gunmen stormed Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, abducting 25 students. One of the victims escaped on the day of the attack. The coordinated response ordered by the Federal Government ultimately resulted in the remaining girls’ safe recovery.
Nigeria has battled recurrent mass school abductions since the 2014 Chibok incident in Borno State, a crisis that continues to strain national security efforts.
