Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has launched a scathing attack on the judiciary, describing a recent court directive ordering a constituency rerun as “shameful” and potentially dangerous for the country’s democracy.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, November 26, Afenyo-Markin warned that the judiciary’s conduct risks undermining Ghana’s peaceful democratic order.

“The judiciary must know that their actions and inaction to serve the interests of whoever their paymaster is have the tendency of destroying our peaceful republic,” he said. “We will not mince words. They can conspire to call us one by one for a so-called contempt of court.”

The Minority Leader questioned why such a consequential order was issued without a written judgment or explanation.

“How can a judge who calls himself a judge sit in court and misconduct himself in such a manner and expect the country to be quiet?” he asked.

According to him, the ruling—described as having “massive political, legal, and democratic consequences”—was delivered without any written reasons, factual findings, or legal analysis.

“There were no written reasons, no factual findings, no legal analysis—just a naked directive issued into the public domain. And now the whole constituency is being told there must be a rerun,” he lamented.

Drawing on his legal experience, Afenyo-Markin noted that while courts sometimes provide reasons after delivering a ruling, that practice is rare and should never apply in cases of such national significance.

He insisted the Minority is not intimidated by the threat of contempt proceedings:
“We are not afraid. If they want to disgrace themselves, the world will see their conduct.”
