The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has ordered the immediate withdrawal of its personnel attached to several high-profile individuals, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former First Lady Aisha Buhari. The directive follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent order on the reduction of police involvement in VIP protection.
Tinubu Orders Withdrawal of Police Escorts From VIPs
During a high-level security meeting in Abuja, President Tinubu instructed that police escorts assigned to VIPs be recalled. He emphasized that officers must focus on core policing responsibilities to enhance national security, particularly in areas with critical security gaps.
The meeting was attended by top security chiefs, including:
- Lt. General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff
- Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Chief of Air Staff
- Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun
- DSS Director-General, Tosin Adeola Ajayi
Police Mobile Force Issues Recall Memo
Following the president’s directive, the 50 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Kubwa, Abuja, released an internal memo instructing all officers attached to 20 VIPs to report back to base by 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 27, 2025.
The memo, referenced AB: 4087/FCT/50PMF/VOL.10 and signed by CSP Suleiman Abdullahi, stated:
“All personnel attached to the underlisted VIPs are to report back to base without delay for immediate redeployment.”
List of Affected VIPs
The memo indicates that officers will be withdrawn from the following individuals, among others:
- Atiku Abubakar
- Namadi Sambo
- Nyesom Wike
- Aisha Buhari
- Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun
- HRM Ogiame Atuwatse III
- Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
- Senator Ahmed Lawan
- Senator Tanko Al-Makura
- Dr. Ramatu Tijjani
- Hon. Yusuf Gagdi
- Hon. Ibrahim Massari

NSCDC to Assume VIP Protection
Under the new policy, VIPs requiring security escorts must now apply through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The police will no longer handle VIP protection services.
