Policy analyst and senior lecturer Dr. Joshua Zaato has raised concerns over the efficiency of certain government offices in Ghana, arguing that many are draining public resources without providing real value to citizens.
Speaking on *Keypoints* on TV3, Dr. Zaato emphasized that public office comes with responsibility—not only while in office but also after leaving. He stressed that accountability should be a core principle for all public servants.
“Anyone who takes an oath of office should understand that they will eventually have to account for their actions,” he said, adding that officials must always be ready to justify their decisions.
He also pointed out that trust in democratic systems relies on the scrutiny of those in power. “Accountability is a constant in democracy. Public officials, whether in office or out, should be held accountable,” he explained.
Dr. Zaato also questioned the value of maintaining certain government institutions, arguing that some offices offer minimal benefit to the public. “A simple value-for-money analysis shows that Ghana is losing out. We should redirect those funds into projects that directly impact citizens, like roads, markets, and support for farmers,” he stated.
On the subject of leadership within government institutions, Dr. Zaato highlighted the importance of building trust. He explained that cooperation from public officers is earned through effective leadership, especially in sectors like security and civil service. “Respect and trust are key. Good leadership leads to quicker cooperation; without it, delays are inevitable,” he noted.
