A Ghanaian man has been arrested by the Akwatia Police Command in the Eastern Region for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million, a case that has left residents deeply shocked and disturbed.
The suspect, identified as Coffie Agyemang, a resident of Kwamang, was apprehended following intelligence reports indicating that he planned to traffic his own child. According to sources, Agyemang allegedly confided in an associate about his intention, citing severe financial hardship as the motivation behind the decision.
Upon receiving the tip-off, the police initiated an undercover operation. Officers reportedly posed as potential buyers and engaged the suspect in negotiations, during which an agreement was allegedly reached to sell the child for GH¢1 million.
Agyemang was arrested when he arrived at the agreed location with the three-year-old boy to finalize the transaction. The child was immediately rescued and placed under protective care by the authorities.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern within the community, with many residents expressing alarm over the safety of children and the increasing cases of human trafficking, often linked to economic challenges.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, as they probe further allegations related to the case, including the possible involvement of other individuals. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court once investigations are completed.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to protecting children and has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat child trafficking and related crimes.
