A young Nigerian woman has sparked widespread discussion on social media after sharing an emotional experience involving her mother that left her feeling hurt and unsupported.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @Teniola, the woman recounted how she called her mother to express how exhausted she felt with life. According to her, she told her mother that she wanted to come home to rest and recover from the emotional strain she had been experiencing.
However, rather than receiving comfort or reassurance, the response she received deeply upset her. She explained that her mother simply asked what she intended to do if she came home, a question that made her feel dismissed at a moment when she desperately needed empathy.
“I called my mum and told her how tired I am and that I just want to come home. All she could ask me was, ‘What are you coming home to do?’” she said.
The woman noted that the response made her feel unheard and emotionally unsupported, especially during a time when she was seeking warmth and reassurance from family.
Her story has since resonated with many social media users, triggering conversations about emotional expression and parental support within African households. Several commenters shared similar experiences, pointing out that many parents struggle to provide emotional comfort, even when their children are clearly overwhelmed.
One user commented, “This is exactly how African parents talk. They don’t know how to comfort emotionally.” Another added, “I feel for you. Most times, our parents aren’t the best people to run to when we’re emotionally drained.”
Reflecting on the incident, the woman said the experience made her realise that having family does not always guarantee emotional safety or comfort. She added that many people feel isolated despite having homes they should be able to return to during difficult times.
The video has continued to circulate online, resonating with many Nigerians who admit they feel tired, overwhelmed, and unable to find solace even in places that are supposed to feel like home.
