IShowSpeed to Receive Ghanaian Passport Following Landmark Africa Tour

Popular American YouTuber and live streamer IShowSpeed, born Darren Watkins Jr., is set to be issued a Ghanaian passport after the conclusion of his widely followed Africa tour.

The 21-year-old digital creator recently visited Ghana as one of the final stops on his ambitious, live-streamed journey across 20 African countries. The tour, branded “Speed Does Africa,” officially came to an end on Tuesday and drew millions of viewers worldwide.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that his office had approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to the internet star. According to the minister, the decision reflects IShowSpeed’s positive influence and his role in promoting Ghana and Africa to a global audience, describing him as a worthy ambassador for both the country and the continent.

Recognition of Ghanaian heritage

The move reportedly followed confirmation of IShowSpeed’s Ghanaian heritage. During one of his live streams, the content creator disclosed that his mother is Ghanaian, a revelation that further strengthened the case for the gesture.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also urged the influencer to continue showcasing Ghana and Africa in a positive light, praising his efforts to challenge negative stereotypes and reshape global perceptions of the continent.

Impact and public reaction

With over 50 million subscribers on YouTube, IShowSpeed has become one of the most influential digital personalities of his generation. His Africa tour received widespread acclaim for spotlighting African cultures, cities, and everyday life in an authentic and engaging way.

However, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions within Ghana. While many citizens applauded the government’s decision and welcomed the recognition of IShowSpeed’s impact, others expressed concern, arguing that extending citizenship privileges to foreign celebrities could undermine the value of Ghanaian nationality.

Despite the differing opinions, the development highlights the growing influence of digital creators in shaping international narratives and strengthening cultural connections between Africa and the global community.
