Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged political parties in Ghana to evaluate policies based on their impact on national development rather than partisan allegiance.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Ahiagbah emphasized that prioritising Ghana’s collective interest over party considerations is a fundamental democratic principle and should not be a subject of debate. He noted that this mindset is essential for the country’s progress and democratic maturity.
According to him, policies and governance decisions should be assessed on whether they benefit the nation as a whole, irrespective of which political party proposes them. He argued that when a policy is beneficial to Ghana, it should naturally be embraced by all political actors, including opposition parties.
Ahiagbah stressed that democratic maturity requires the ability to acknowledge and support good ideas, even when they originate from political opponents. He warned that rejecting sound policies purely on partisan grounds undermines national development and weakens democratic values.
His remarks come amid heightened political discourse, where parties are often sharply divided over governance issues. He maintained that adopting a country-first approach would promote unity, stability, and stronger democratic institutions in Ghana.
Ahiagbah concluded by encouraging all political parties to internalise this principle, describing it as a necessary step toward building a more inclusive and forward-looking political culture.
