ASEM ASI: Nigerian Skit Maker Sunshine Dies Following Complications from Fibroid Surgery

Nigerian content creator and skit maker Esther Thomas, popularly known as Sunshine, has passed away following complications from fibroid surgery. She died on Friday, January 9, 2026, according to an official announcement released by her family.

The family confirmed her death on Saturday via Sunshine’s verified Instagram page, describing the loss as sudden and deeply painful.

In a heartfelt statement, the family wrote:

“We, the family of Esther Thomas (also known as Sunshine), with heavy hearts regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved sister and daughter, who passed away on January 9, 2026, following an unsuccessful surgery.”

According to the statement, Sunshine had been battling fibroid and underwent surgery in an attempt to address the condition. Unfortunately, the procedure resulted in complications that led to her death. The family also noted that arrangements were being made for her burial.

Following the announcement, fans, colleagues, and fellow content creators took to social media to express shock and grief, paying tribute to Sunshine’s talent, creativity, and vibrant personality.

Providing further details, fellow content creator Chidera Madu shared a timeline of events leading up to her death in a Facebook post. He explained that Sunshine began experiencing severe stomach pain in late December 2025.

According to him, she complained of worsening pain on December 28, 2025, which escalated by January 1, necessitating hospital admission. Medical tests and scans reportedly revealed that she had fibroid growths that had significantly increased in size. She was admitted to Orchid General Hospital and placed on medication.

Chidera further alleged that unknown to them at the time, Sunshine was not receiving full medical treatment due to an ongoing doctors’ strike at the hospital, and was only being given pain relief.

He stated that concerns arose when no doctor was consistently available, prompting the decision to transfer her to another hospital. At the new facility, doctors reviewed her previous test results and advised immediate surgery as her condition deteriorated.

Although the surgery was reportedly declared successful, Sunshine later developed complications and sadly passed away shortly afterward.

Sunshine’s death has sparked renewed conversations online about healthcare challenges, medical strikes, and access to timely treatment in Nigeria. She is remembered by many for her humour, creativity, and the joy she brought to her audience.
