President John Dramani Mahama has announced a reduction in the cost of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage to GH¢60,000, while urging prospective pilgrims to make their payments early to avoid logistical challenges.
The President made the announcement on January 29 during the commissioning of the Akweteyman Central Mosque in Accra.
“This year, we have been allocated a quota of 5,960 pilgrims, and we have reduced the fare to GH¢60,000,” President Mahama said.
“At my last meeting with the Hajj Committee, I was informed that the quota has already been filled.”
He explained that late payments have consistently created difficulties for organisers, often disrupting the planning process.
“We do not want the usual situation where people delay payment and then rush at the last minute,” he said.
“After the deadline, they ask for the process to be reopened so they can pay.”
According to President Mahama, such delays affect the entire pilgrimage arrangement and can result in some prospective pilgrims missing out.
“This is what causes delays and, in some cases, leads to people being left behind,” he noted.
He stressed that individuals who fail to meet the payment deadline will have to wait until the following year.
“The Hajj Committee has reached the quota, so those who paid late will have to wait until next year,” he said.
President Mahama appealed to the public to cooperate fully with the Hajj Committee to ensure a smooth, orderly, and successful pilgrimage.
