Nigerian fashion designer Toyin Lawani has publicly accused Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, located in Victoria Island, Lagos, of medical negligence, adding her voice to growing concerns surrounding the facility. Her allegations come shortly after award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie made similar claims against the hospital.
In a detailed post shared on Instagram, Lawani recounted her experience after undergoing spinal surgery at Euracare, a procedure she said cost nearly ₦100 million, including related medical care. According to her, the surgery was followed by severe complications that dramatically altered her life.
Lawani alleged that she began experiencing serious issues shortly after the operation, including bleeding in her lungs. She said she was rushed back into surgery the following day, during which she reportedly stopped breathing.
“I still cannot speak properly or walk well. I had complications and started bleeding in my lungs. I was taken back into the theatre the next day, and before I knew it, I stopped breathing. They had to puncture my lungs, and my vocal cords were damaged,” she wrote.
Medical Treatment Abroad
Following her discharge, Lawani sought further medical advice in the United Kingdom, where specialists reportedly recommended additional surgery. She later traveled abroad with her family, where doctors discovered severe lung infections that required further medical intervention.
Describing the physical and emotional toll of the ordeal, Lawani said she had to relearn basic activities such as walking, speaking, and bathing. She disclosed that she is still undergoing speech therapy.
“I had to learn how to walk again, speak again, and bathe myself. I am still in therapy for my speech till now. When I say I am dealing with trauma, people do not fully understand. This experience completely changed my life,” she said.
Plans for Legal Action
Lawani stated that she intends to pursue legal action against Euracare Hospital once her health improves sufficiently. She described the experience as deeply traumatic and life-altering.
Linked to Wider Allegations
Her claims emerge amid increased scrutiny of Euracare Hospital following allegations by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie concerning the death of her 21-month-old son, Nnamdi. Adichie accused the hospital of negligence after complications reportedly occurred during preparations for an MRI and a planned medical evacuation abroad.
In response to the incident, the Lagos State Government has ordered a full investigation into the child’s death, while health authorities continue to review the hospital’s clinical practices.
As investigations and potential legal actions unfold, these allegations have intensified public discussion around patient safety and accountability within Nigeria’s private healthcare sector.
