Osei Owusu Explains Return to Active NPP Duties After Retirement Decision

Former Member of Parliament for Ashanti Bekwai, Joseph Osei Owusu, has explained that his return to active duties within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was driven by a deep sense of responsibility rather than personal ambition.

Speaking on PM Express, Osei Owusu disclosed that following the 2025 general elections, he had taken a firm decision to retire completely from politics. According to him, the decision was deliberate and final, as he intended to disengage entirely from political activities.

“I had fully recused myself from politics after the 2025 elections,” he stated, emphasizing that he approached his retirement with seriousness and conviction.

However, this resolve was tested when he was invited to chair the NPP’s National Conference. The request, he said, compelled him to reflect carefully on the state of the party and his role as a senior member.

“The first call I received was to chair the National Conference,” he explained. “I had to ask myself whether it would be right to abandon the NPP at such a critical moment.”

After much reflection, Osei Owusu agreed to take on the responsibility, stressing that his acceptance was guided by principle and commitment to excellence. “I accepted the role with the conviction that if the task must be done, then it must be done well,” he told host Evans Mensah.

He was quick to clarify that his decision was not motivated by a desire for influence, recognition, or political advantage. Instead, he described it as a moral obligation and an act of service to a party he has long served.

Although he still considers himself retired from active politics, Osei Owusu noted that there are moments when experience and leadership must be offered to ensure stability.

“Sometimes, if strong people do not stand up, the entire structure may collapse,” he remarked.

Ultimately, he said his involvement was aimed at helping the party navigate a difficult period and maintain internal stability, adding that his focus was on service rather than position or visibility.
