“Taste Is Subjective”: MC Portfolio Defends Ghanaian Jollof After IShowSpeed’s Comment

Publicist and entertainment commentator MC Portfolio has joined the ongoing Ghana–Nigeria jollof debate following remarks made by popular American streamer IShowSpeed during his recent visit to Ghana.

Reacting to the streamer’s assertion that Nigerian jollof rice is superior, MC Portfolio took to X (formerly Twitter) to emphasize that food preferences are deeply personal and should not be elevated to universal standards.

According to him, individual taste buds respond differently to flavours, particularly when it comes to spice levels. He noted that what appeals to one person may not necessarily appeal to another.

MC Portfolio highlighted his personal appreciation for locally produced jollof, specifically praising Chickenman and Pizzaman Ghana for their rich flavour and spiciness. He explained that the same recipe could be less appealing to someone who is not accustomed to spicy food, reinforcing his point that taste varies from person to person.

He further argued that IShowSpeed’s opinion, while valid as a personal preference, should not be treated as a benchmark for determining the quality of Ghanaian jollof.

MC Portfolio also drew parallels with other moments from the streamer’s tour, noting that a lack of enthusiasm toward certain experiences does not make anyone an authority on quality or value. In his view, personal reactions should not be mistaken for objective judgment.

The entertainment pundit pointed to the strong public reaction during the food tasting episode as evidence of how strongly Ghanaians identify with and value their jollof. He described the passionate response as a reflection of national pride and cultural attachment to the dish.

Concluding his remarks, MC Portfolio reaffirmed his support for Ghanaian food brands, commending their consistency and impact over the years. He maintained that brands like Chickenman and Pizzaman Ghana continue to stand out as some of the country’s most successful local food businesses.
