Zinedine Zidane Moves Closer to Long-Awaited Return to Football Management

Zinedine Zidane appears to be taking his first concrete steps toward a return to football management, nearly five years after leaving Real Madrid for the second time. The French icon, widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches of the modern era, has openly confirmed his intention to resume work as a head coach in the near future.

Zidane stepped away from Real Madrid in 2021, explaining at the time that he felt the club no longer had full confidence in him. Despite his departure, his legacy at the Santiago Bernabéu remains extraordinary. Across two spells in charge, he delivered one of the most remarkable managerial records in football history.

During his first tenure between 2016 and 2018, Zidane led Real Madrid to an unprecedented three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, alongside a La Liga triumph. He later returned to guide the club to another Spanish league title in 2020, further cementing his status as a club legend.

Such sustained success meant Zidane was consistently linked with some of the biggest jobs in world football following his exit from Madrid. Clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United, as well as the France national team, were all reportedly interested in securing his services. Despite persistent speculation, Zidane remained away from the touchline—until now.

According to reports, the 51-year-old is ready to accept a new challenge and has entered preliminary discussions regarding his next role. While several clubs have attempted to lure him back into management, it has long been believed that Zidane’s ultimate ambition is to become head coach of the French national team.

Many expected him to succeed Didier Deschamps after France finished runners-up at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, or following UEFA Euro 2024. However, Deschamps remained in charge, delaying Zidane’s anticipated arrival. That situation may now be changing.

French outlet *L’Équipe* reports that the French Football Federation has begun planning for a post-Deschamps era and has already opened talks with Zidane. Although discussions are said to be at an early and highly confidential stage, Zidane is reportedly the federation’s preferred candidate, highlighting their desire for a high-profile successor.

Zidane is understood to be open to the role, with one key condition: full autonomy over the technical structure, including the freedom to appoint his own trusted staff to implement his footballing philosophy. David Bettoni, his long-time assistant at Real Madrid, is expected to be among those who could join him.

The former France captain has never hidden his desire to return to management. Speaking at the Festival Dello Sport in October, Zidane reaffirmed his plans and ambitions.

“For sure I’m returning to work as head coach, it’s my plan,” Zidane said. “My desire is to become France head coach one day… let’s see.”

As talks continue behind the scenes, Zidane’s long-awaited comeback to the dugout now appears closer than ever.
