NPP Chairman Challenges NDC to Name a Single Social Intervention After One Year in Power

The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Wasa Amenfi East, Nana Kofi Amankwaah, has challenged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to identify at least one social intervention it has introduced since assuming office.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Amankwaah acknowledged that Ghana’s economy appears to be showing signs of improvement, citing recent reductions in the prices of certain goods and services. However, he argued that the NDC does not deserve the level of public praise it is currently receiving.

“The NDC has done nothing and does not deserve the hype they are enjoying,” he said.

According to him, the goodwill currently being enjoyed by the NDC is neither exceptional nor unprecedented.

“The NPP enjoyed similar goodwill for three consecutive years while we were in government,” he noted.

Reacting to comments by the programme host, who cited data suggesting that many Ghanaians are happier under the NDC—largely due to declining fuel prices—Mr. Amankwaah disagreed, insisting that such statistics do not present the full picture.

“Those figures do not tell the whole story,” he told Agya Yaw Obeng Preko on Asona FM.

He explained that fluctuations in global oil prices can significantly influence fuel costs, independent of government policy.

“Changes in global oil prices can either work in favour of, or against, an incumbent government,” he added.

Mr. Amankwaah also questioned the quality of some consumer goods whose prices have reportedly declined under the current administration.

“Most of the items that have become cheaper, including rice, are of inferior quality,” he said.

“The rice being promoted as affordable absorbs excessive water when cooked. Quality rice remains expensive, and many people are still feeling the economic pressure.”
