Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has delivered a strong critique of the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing party executives of refusing to accept responsibility for the party’s electoral defeat and manipulating internal structures to retain power.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV, which was monitored by MyNewsGh, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said the party’s leadership failed to demonstrate accountability after losing power.
“The people who led us to defeat did not resign. That is the problem,” he stated.
According to him, rather than undertaking an honest review of the party’s loss, the leadership opted to impose a centralised, top-down system that undermines unity and reform.
“Instead of bringing the party together to analyse why we lost, they created a system controlled from the top,” he said.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng further alleged that this structure is being used to influence the selection of the party’s next flagbearer for personal gain rather than electoral success.
“They are orchestrating the flagbearership very early so it ends up in their hands—not to win elections, but to maintain positions,” he remarked.
He described the group behind this approach as a “fake faction” within the party, arguing that it does not represent the true values of the NPP.
“These people are not the soul of the party. They are protecting power, not building unity,” he added.
The former minister also disclosed that he did not vote in the 2024 general election, describing his decision as a protest against what he viewed as flawed internal party processes.
“I did not support the way the candidate was selected,” he explained. “When you bribe the crooked and intimidate the coward, backlash is inevitable.”
He insisted that the party failed to conduct a transparent post-election review, noting the absence of public accountability and meaningful reforms.
“There was no honest assessment of our defeat—no transparency, no accountability, and no reform,” he said.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng warned that continuing along the same path could further divide the party and weaken its electoral prospects.
“You don’t rebuild after defeat by centralising power. You rebuild by listening, reforming, and uniting,” he cautioned.
He stressed that his criticism was not directed at individuals but at the system itself.
“This is not personal. It is systemic. And if it continues, the party will keep losing,” he concluded.
