AYEHU: Central Region in Shock as Remains of Presbyterian Church Steward Go Missing from Mortuary

Family members and mourners of George Kwame Antwi, a deceased steward of the Presbyterian Church in Assin Odumase in the Central Region, were left distraught after discovering that his body was missing from the mortuary where it had been deposited.

The family had completed all funeral arrangements, including payments for undertakers, sound systems, canopies, mattresses, accommodation, catering, and other logistics, in preparation for his burial.

Mr. Antwi, who was 40 years old at the time of his death in September 2025, was placed at the Assin Brofoyedur Mortuary for preservation. However, when relatives arrived at the facility to retrieve his remains for the funeral scheduled for Saturday, January 17, 2026, mortuary staff were unable to locate the body.

The incident brought the entire funeral programme to an abrupt halt, despite the arrival of mourners from different parts of the country. The new date for the burial remains uncertain.

Information gathered from the family indicates that Mr. Antwi’s body may have been mistakenly exchanged with that of a 75-year-old man and subsequently buried by another family approximately three months ago.

Speaking to Citi News at the family residence, the head of the family, Asare Oduro, explained that a delegation sent to the mortuary was instead directed to report to the Assin Fosu Police Station.

“Before we could proceed, we were asked to go to the police station, where we were informed that another family had wrongly buried our relative about three months ago,” he said.

The family is now demanding compensation to cover the cost of the disrupted funeral preparations, as well as the exhumation and proper reburial of Mr. Antwi’s remains.
