A Nigerian woman has sparked conversation online after highlighting what she described as the deeply damaging effects of “Yahoo” (internet fraud) culture on the country’s youth, social values, and long-term development.
According to her, while some individuals financially benefit from Yahoo-related activities, the broader consequences for society are severe and far-reaching. She argued that the culture has distorted priorities among young people and undermined meaningful personal and national growth.
She noted that Yahoo culture often encourages drug abuse among young men, with some resorting to substances to stay awake, cope with stress, or sustain prolonged online activities. Beyond substance abuse, she emphasized a growing sense of purposelessness among many youths.
“Yahoo has made a lot of people purposeless. Many young people have little to no interest in politics or governance, even though these directly affect their daily lives,” she stated.
The woman also criticized the culture of entitlement she believes Yahoo promotes, particularly among some women who view money obtained without effort or investment as disposable and limitless.
She warned that the recurring cycle of hustling, sudden cash inflow, reckless spending, and starting over creates a stagnant lifestyle that prevents long-term progress and stability.
Urging young people involved in internet fraud to reconsider their choices, she said, “If you’re doing Yahoo, it’s time to stop. Discover your talent and find a business or skill you can manage properly.”
In conclusion, she contrasted today’s lifestyle-driven mindset with that of earlier generations, noting that some individuals in the past reinvested proceeds from fraudulent activities into legitimate businesses, however questionable their origins. According to her, many young people today focus solely on appearances and luxury without building sustainable investments.
“Many people now only want the lifestyle—copying others without thinking about investment or the future. That is why Yahoo is one of the major problems Nigeria is facing,” she said.
Her comments have continued to generate mixed reactions on social media, with some users agreeing that internet fraud has harmed societal values, while others blamed poor governance, unemployment, and lack of opportunities for the persistence of the problem.
