Sadness Hit Nigeria: Nigerian Gospel Singer Omije Ojumi Dies After Prolonged Illness

Popular Nigerian gospel musician Bunmi Adeoye Akinnanu, professionally known as Omije Ojumi, has passed away.

According to reports, the singer died on Tuesday after battling a prolonged illness linked to a leg condition. Her death comes several months after she publicly appealed for prayers and divine healing as her health challenges became more severe.

In 2025, a video of Omije Ojumi during a church service at G. F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, circulated widely on social media. In the footage, she was seen seated with her leg stretched out as members of the congregation and church leaders prayed fervently for her recovery. During the service, a cleric disclosed that she had been experiencing persistent bleeding from the affected leg, prompting intense intercessory prayers.

Rise to Prominence

Omije Ojumi rose to fame in the early 2000s after leaving a successful career in the banking sector to pursue gospel music full-time. Her stage name, Omije Oju Mi—which translates to “Tears of My Eyes”—was taken from her debut album, which brought her widespread recognition within the gospel music community.

She went on to release several notable albums, including Dabira, Alatilehin, Ma Sunkun Mo, and Testimony. She was also the founder and leader of the Omije Ojumi Gospel International Music Band.

Academically, Akinnanu studied Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at Lagos State University (LASU), having earlier attended Lagos State Polytechnic. Before fully transitioning into music, she reportedly worked in the banking industry for over a decade.

Renowned for her unique blend of traditional and contemporary gospel sounds, Omije Ojumi built a loyal following through songs that emphasized faith, perseverance, and unwavering trust in God. Her passing represents a significant loss to the Nigerian gospel music industry and to many fans who were inspired by her life and ministry.
