The Deputy Spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has rejected claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is an ethnically or regionally exclusive political organization, describing such assertions as misleading and inconsistent with the party’s core values.
While acknowledging that a large proportion of the party’s membership comes from the Ashanti Region, Dr. Amoakoh emphasized that the NPP was founded on national principles rather than ethnic or regional identity. According to her, portraying the party as an “Ashanti party” undermines its ideological foundation and broad national appeal.
“It is true that many members of the NPP are from the Ashanti Region, but it is a misconception to suggest that the party belongs exclusively to Ashantis. The NPP is built on principles that transcend regional and ethnic boundaries,” she stated.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Angel FM, which was monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Dr. Amoakoh explained that as the party prepares for its internal elections and national contests, the focus remains firmly on competence, leadership ability, and vision. She noted that the support being garnered for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is based on his track record and capacity to deliver effective leadership, not his background or place of origin.
“Dr. Bawumia is competent and has a clear and compelling vision for the country,” she said.
Dr. Amoakoh further stressed that the shared objective of NPP members is to elect a leader who can unify the party and provide strong, credible leadership. “Our collective agenda is to choose someone who is capable and prepared to lead. We need a leader who can do the job, and Dr. Bawumia fits that description,” she added.
She concluded by urging party supporters and the general public to move beyond ethnic and regional narratives and instead assess political leadership based on character, competence, and vision for national development.
