The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced a 48-year-old head porter, Yaw Asare, to two years in prison for unlawfully damaging parts of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in Accra.
According to court proceedings, Asare was arrested on June 9, 2025, after he was caught vandalizing structural components of the newly constructed interchange, including parapet beams. He was charged with causing unlawful damage, in violation of Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Roads and Highways issued a statement expressing growing concern over the increasing vandalism of public infrastructure.
“In recent times, the Ministry has observed with deep concern the growing trend of deliberate damage to road infrastructure by members of the public. These acts include vandalism and destruction caused by vehicular crashes, particularly involving traffic lights,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry further warned that such behavior would not be tolerated and urged the public to refrain from acts that compromise national infrastructure.
“The public is reminded that damaging public infrastructure is a criminal offence and will be prosecuted accordingly,” the statement concluded.
Authorities have encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to public property to the relevant agencies.
