In a concerted effort to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources, authorities in Kintampo North have apprehended four individuals engaged in illegal mining activities on the Black Volta River.
The arrests were made on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, during a coordinated operation led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), in collaboration with police and military personnel. The operation followed intelligence reports indicating ongoing illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—within the municipality.
The Black Volta, one of Ghana’s major water bodies, has recently suffered increased levels of pollution due to illegal mining. This has sparked growing concerns over environmental degradation and its impact on local communities.
Following the operation, the MCE confirmed that the municipality had been tracking the activities of the miners.
“We discovered a group of illegal miners polluting the Black Volta. We’ve been monitoring them closely and took swift action to protect our water resources,” he stated.
During the raid, the task force seized several pieces of heavy machinery used for mining. Additional equipment was found along the riverbank. The MCE emphasized that all seized tools will be destroyed to prevent further misuse.
He also affirmed the municipality’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining:
“We are determined to make Kintampo North a no-go zone for galamsey operations. We will leave no stone unturned in this fight.”
The four suspects are currently in police custody and will face legal proceedings in the coming days. Local authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining throughout the region.
