The High Court in Obuasi has dismissed an election petition filed by former Minister for Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, challenging the parliamentary victory of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani in the Adansi Asokwa constituency.
The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, by Justice Kwabena Twumasi, who declared that the petition lacked merit. The court further ordered Mr. Hammond to pay GH¢60,000 in legal costs, describing the case as a waste of judicial resources.
Mr. Hammond, who had served as Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa for more than 20 years, was defeated in the December 2024 general election by Mr. Dorani, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Mr. Dorani secured 14,229 votes, winning by a margin of 954 votes.
Refusing to concede defeat, Mr. Hammond filed the petition on January 15, 2025, seeking to overturn the election results. However, he failed to appear in court on three separate occasions, which contributed to the dismissal of the case.
Reacting to the verdict, Richard Andy, legal counsel for Mr. Dorani, welcomed the ruling and expressed confidence in the judiciary’s decision.
With the petition resolved, Mr. Dorani officially retains his seat as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa. This judgment effectively closes one of the few remaining legal challenges stemming from the 2024 parliamentary elections.
