Residents of Bompata in the Asante Akim South District of the Ashanti Region have vehemently opposed plans to begin mining operations in their community.
On Sunday, locals defied police directives to stage a large demonstration against proposed mining activities—whether legal, illegal, or community-led—within the Bompata Traditional Area.
The protesters, who converged at the Bompata market, marched through the town’s main streets to Wenkyi, holding placards bearing messages such as “Stop mining, preserve our lands and water bodies,” “Bompata United is against all forms of mining,” and “Bompata says no to mining.”
After the march, demonstrators returned to the market, where Mr. Joseph Baah, a member of the organizing committee, addressed the crowd. He disclosed that information had reached the community indicating that BB Brothers Limited, an Accra-based mining company, along with some individuals, was planning to commence mining operations in the Bompata Traditional Area.
“We, the residents of Bompata, completely reject and oppose any such plans,” Mr. Baah declared. “Our opposition stems from concerns about insecurity, environmental degradation, and the social, economic, and health consequences of mining—as seen in other parts of the country. We will not allow our land to suffer the same fate.”
Mr. Baah further announced that a petition outlining the community’s demands would be submitted to the Omanhene of the Bompata Traditional Area, the Municipal Chief Executive of Asante Akim South, and the Juaso District Police Commander.
