Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage says the global rise of Afrobeats has helped her fully embrace her African identity, describing the genre as a source of pride and empowerment for the continent.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Tiwa addressed recent claims by music industry figures — including Paul Okoye and DJ Big N — suggesting that Afrobeats is losing momentum. The “Somebody’s Son” hitmaker, however, firmly disagreed.
“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world,” she said. “We created it from nothing — no structure, no support, not even belief from our own people at first.”
From Self-Doubt to Pride
Tiwa reflected on her early life in London, revealing that as a child, she once struggled to feel proud of her African roots due to the lack of positive representation.
“I remember growing up in London and not being happy to be African. But now, I’m so proud because of how far Afrobeats has come,” she admitted.
She credited the genre’s success for reshaping global perceptions of Africa and inspiring a new generation of artists to embrace their heritage.
Defying Doubts and Breaking Barriers
Tiwa Savage dismissed claims that Afrobeats is fading, noting that it continues to dominate global charts and fill international arenas.
“People said Afrobeats would have its 15 minutes of fame — but here we are, still breaking records,” she said confidently.
Reaffirming her belief in the resilience of African creatives, she described Afrobeats as more than just music — a unifying symbol of African strength, culture, and pride.
“As much as they try to silence us, the music is not going anywhere. We are Africans, and we are unstoppable,” Tiwa declared.
