Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has dismissed Wayne Rooney’s recent comments blaming the team’s poor run of form on a lack of leadership, describing the remarks as “lazy criticism.”
Rooney had claimed that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah failed to “really lead the team this season” following Liverpool’s fourth consecutive Premier League defeat to Brentford last week.
Van Dijk: “It’s Easy to Blame Players”
Speaking after Liverpool’s 2–0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, Van Dijk said he was unfazed by the former England captain’s comments but believed they were unfair.
“I didn’t hear him last year,” the Dutch defender told reporters. “It doesn’t hurt me. Obviously, he’s a legend of the game, but that comment is, I would say, a bit of a lazy criticism. It’s easy to blame players, but we do it together.”
Van Dijk added that pundits often look for scapegoats when results don’t go well.
“Last year, when things were going well, you didn’t hear that at all. It is what it is. He has an opinion, and we have to deal with it. There are no hard feelings.”
Focus Turns to Real Madrid and Manchester City
Liverpool, currently third in the Premier League and seven points behind leaders Arsenal, face a crucial week ahead. Arne Slot’s side will host Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday before traveling to face Manchester City on Sunday.
Addressing reports suggesting that manager Arne Slot is under pressure, Van Dijk offered his support:
“I’ve heard the reports about him being under pressure, but this club doesn’t make rash decisions. We believe we can work our way out of this together.”
