The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has joined calls for locally based footballers to be considered for Ghana’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The proposal, widely supported within the football community and among some Members of Parliament, seeks to ensure that top-performing players from the Ghana Premier League are given an opportunity to represent the nation on football’s biggest stage.
This renewed advocacy follows FIFA’s announcement of a $300 million compensation package for clubs whose players participate in the World Cup — a policy that could provide a significant financial boost for domestic clubs.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the move is both sensible and beneficial for Ghanaian football.
“I agree. There’s a precedent. At the last World Cup, local players were included, and both the players and their clubs benefited. I see no reason why we shouldn’t do the same again,” he said in an interview with Joy Sports.
The Member of Parliament for Abura Aseibu-Kwamankese further emphasized that the expanded 26-man squad for the tournament provides enough room for local talents to be integrated.
“It’s a 26-man squad; not everyone gets to play. Some players may not even feature in a match. So why don’t we use this opportunity to select the best-performing local players?
At the same time, our clubs will also benefit financially from the FIFA package. It’s a win-win situation, and I fully support it,” he added.
Ghana will learn its group-stage opponents when the World Cup draw is conducted on December 5, 2025.
