The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially distanced itself from comments reportedly made by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, concerning the historical role of Ashantis and their supposed entitlement to leadership positions within the party.
In a statement signed by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Secretary of the Caucus, the MPs described the remarks as offensive and inconsistent with the core values of the NPP.
“These comments are deeply offensive and run contrary to the spirit of unity, respect, and equality that defines the NPP,” the statement emphasized.
The Caucus reiterated that the NPP was built on principles of meritocracy, equal opportunity, and inclusivity, stressing that leadership within the party is earned through service and dedication rather than ethnic or historical considerations.
“Ours is a party that rewards merit, loyalty, and service — not lineage, tribe, or religion. Every member, regardless of origin or background, has an equal right to aspire to any position within the party or in national leadership,” the statement added.
The Ashanti MPs further rejected any attempt to exploit ethnic or historical narratives to sow division within the party.
“The Ashanti Region rejects any effort to use history, tribe, or identity to divide our ranks or question the belonging of any loyal member,” the group stated.
Calling for responsible communication, the Caucus urged party members, especially those in leadership positions, to exercise restraint and decorum in their public statements.
“We encourage all members to be guided by restraint and respect in their public engagements,” the statement concluded.
The Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to unity within the party and the nation, declaring that:
“The Ashanti Regional NPP Parliamentary Caucus stands firmly for a united Party and a united Ghana.”
