Grammy Award-winning Nigerian superstar Burna Boy has stirred up conversation across the continent after declaring that the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti is the only African musician greater than him.
Speaking during a recent livestream session with Australian streamer Playboymax, the “Last Last” hitmaker confidently described Fela as “the king,” stating that no other African artist surpasses his own accomplishments.
“He [Fela Kuti] is the king. He is the only one [African artist] who is greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy said.
The singer’s bold remark has since sparked widespread debate on social media, with fans and music lovers divided over his self-assessment. While some applauded him for recognising Fela’s unmatched influence on African music, others criticised the statement as ego-driven and dismissive of other legendary artists.
Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, has built a global reputation for blending Afro-fusion sounds with powerful storytelling. He has won multiple BET Awards, MOBOs, and a Grammy Award for Twice As Tall in 2021 — achievements that cement his place among Africa’s most successful exports.
Still, his claim reignites the long-standing debate over who truly stands as Africa’s greatest musician, a conversation that continues to evolve with every new generation of artists.
