A butcher from Shelleng Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Umaru Usman, has been released from prison after serving part of a 17-year sentence related to an unpaid debt of N150,000.
Usman’s release was widely reported online, drawing attention to the case of an individual imprisoned over a relatively small financial dispute.
**The Conviction and Its Background**
Usman was convicted by the Shelleng Area Court on charges of breach of trust and cheating. He had been held at the Numan Correctional Centre until a special review panel intervened.
His conviction stemmed from an agreement in which Usman bought rams on credit for his butchery business, agreeing to settle the debt after sales. However, despite making partial payments, he was unable to fully repay the debt, which led to his arrest and eventual sentencing.
**Intervention by the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee**
Usman’s freedom came after the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, headed by the state Chief Judge, Justice Hapsat Abdulrahman, visited the Numan Correctional Centre as part of an ongoing initiative to address overcrowding in prisons and review questionable or excessive sentences.
Following a thorough review of his case, the committee ordered Usman’s release. However, it also mandated that he repay the remaining N150,000 owed to the creditor.

Usman expressed relief at his release and joined other inmates whose cases are being reconsidered under the committee's reform initiative. This ongoing effort aims to address issues of overcrowding and rectify potentially unjust convictions across correctional facilities in Adamawa State.
