Many Women in Rehab Are There Because of Broken Hearts — Wendy Shay

Award-winning singer Wendy Shay is using her platform to raise awareness about mental health, revealing that her new song, PTSD, was inspired by a young woman she met at a rehabilitation center.

In a recent interview on GHOne TV, monitored by MyNewsGh, Wendy Shay shared her experience visiting a rehab center as part of her charitable work. She was profoundly moved by the story of a young woman who had endured trauma and was on the path to recovery.

“I met a beautiful young woman who had been introduced to drugs by her first boyfriend. The relationship was toxic, and when he went to jail, she struggled to find love and acceptance again,” Wendy recounted. “She eventually checked herself into rehab because she was having suicidal thoughts.”

Wendy, who trained as a nurse before pursuing a music career, immediately recognized the woman’s symptoms as indicative of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“Her story touched me deeply, and that’s how the song PTSD was born,” she explained.

The singer emphasized that heartbreak and toxic relationships are significant contributors to mental health challenges, especially among women.

“People often make light of heartbreak, but it’s not a laughing matter. It can affect your mind and soul. Many women in rehab centers are there because of broken hearts,” Wendy said.

She called for greater openness in discussing mental health in Ghana.

“Mental health is not talked about enough. As someone with a platform, I feel it’s my responsibility to raise awareness,” she added.

Wendy also highlighted that her album Ready explores themes such as mental health, love, and self-worth — issues she believes are essential for emotional healing and personal growth.
