A series of recent polls reveal that President Donald Trump’s job approval remains relatively stable, though signs of erosion—especially among independent voters—have begun to emerge during the second half of his second term.
Aggregated approval ratings from The New York Times and RealClearPolitics place Trump’s overall support at approximately 44% to 45%, with disapproval ratings hovering around 53% to 42%. Despite the apparent steadiness, individual polls highlight important nuances and emerging trends.
Emerson College Poll
- Approval: 46%
- Disapproval: 47%
In Emerson College’s national survey conducted July 21–22, Trump’s approval ticked up one percentage point from June. Spencer Kimball, the poll’s executive director, noted, “About six months into the second Trump administration, the president’s approval rating has stabilized in the mid-40s.” However, disapproval has climbed gradually, now standing at 47%.
Trump’s strongest issue-specific performance in this poll was on immigration, with 45% approving and 46% disapproving. The economy presented a greater challenge: 41% approved while 51% disapproved of Trump’s handling. The president’s tariff policies drew particularly low marks, with only 36% approval and 50% disapproval.
Partisan divides remained stark: 87% of Republicans approved of Trump’s job performance, compared to just 10% of Democrats and 38% of independents. The divide was especially sharp on immigration, where only 13% of Democrats approved versus 80% of Republicans.
This poll surveyed 1,400 registered voters and has a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points.
Gallup Poll
- Approval: 37%
- Disapproval: 58%
Gallup’s July 7–21 survey showed Trump’s approval plunging to 37%—his lowest rating of the current term and close to the 34% he recorded at the end of his first term.
Among independent voters, approval dropped dramatically to 29%, down from 46% at the start of the year. Gallup attributed much of the decline to shifting attitudes among independents.
In terms of key issues, Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict drew his strongest marks, with 42% approval. Foreign policy overall garnered 41%, while the federal budget drew only 19% approval from independents—his lowest on any issue.
This poll surveyed 1,002 Americans and carries a margin of error of ±4 percentage points.
Fox News Poll
- Approval: 46%
- Disapproval: 54%
Fox News’ July 18–21 poll offered Trump a slightly more favorable picture, with a 46% approval rating.
Trump received his highest marks on border security, with 56% approval. However, economic issues, especially inflation and tariffs, continued to drag down his ratings—only 36% supported his approach in these areas.
Party breakdowns remained consistent with other polls: 88% of Republicans approved of his performance, along with 37% of independents and just 7% of Democrats.
The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
Summary
As President Trump advances through his second term, his approval ratings remain polarized and increasingly defined by party affiliation. While Republicans remain overwhelmingly supportive, the president faces mounting disapproval from independents and continued resistance from Democrats—particularly on economic and immigration issues.
With approval ratings ranging from 37% to 46% across major polls, Trump’s political standing appears stable but fragile, especially as key policy areas like tariffs and budget management draw intensified critics.
