A recent audit by Deloitte and Touche has revealed that the National Cathedral Secretariat paid a total of $103,000 (over GHS1.5 million) in rent to Reverend Victor Kusi Boateng over a two-year span for accommodation in Accra.
According to the audit, Rev. Kusi Boateng—who resides in Kumasi—was provided accommodation in Accra to facilitate his oversight of the National Cathedral’s construction. The property in question is located at Glover’s House, 31 5th Link Road, Cantonments, Accra, and was leased from January 2021 to December 2022.
While the lease agreement reportedly listed a monthly rent of $4,500, actual payments made amounted to $3,000 per month. The payments were distributed as follows:
- Jan–May 2021: $22,500
- Jun–Dec 2021: $31,500
- Jan–Jun 2022: $27,000
- Jul–Dec 2022: $22,000
However, the audit report pointed out that there was no documentation to confirm the lease agreement or to justify the necessity of the accommodation.
This discovery has reignited controversy around Rev. Kusi Boateng, who has previously faced allegations related to a double identity scandal. Critics have flagged inconsistencies between the reported lease terms and actual payments as potential signs of financial mismanagement.
So far, the National Cathedral Secretariat has not commented on the audit’s findings.
The National Cathedral project has been under continuous public scrutiny due to various financial controversies. Allegations of misuse of funds have triggered calls for transparency, prompting the government to order a separate, full-scale audit by the Ghana Audit Service.
