orrential Rains Collapse Bridges, Isolating Wa West Communities

Severe rainfall on July 12, 2025, s caused the collapse of several key bridges in Ghana’s Wa West District, cutting off communities and disrupting travel along the vital Varimpere-Lassie corridor in the Upper West Region.

The destruction has left many residents stranded, unable to access essential services in the district capital, Wechiau. The affected stretch serves as a major lifeline, linking locals to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Ziembo Annetus Dery, Assembly Member for the Varimpere Electoral Area, described the situation as critical in an interview with Channel One News on July 20.

“Three bridges collapsed after the heavy rains. This road is crucial—nearly 80% of Wa West’s population uses it, and it connects at least three major markets. We’re calling on the government and relevant ministries to act quickly. People are suffering,” Dery said.

Although temporary bypasses have been created, they are already proving unreliable, especially as more rainfall is expected.

Wa West District Chief Executive Richard Wullo confirmed the extensive damage and said technical teams are currently assessing the situation. The district assembly is working with relevant agencies to develop both short-term relief and long-term infrastructure plans.

The impact on local livelihoods has been significant. Farmers and drivers who depend on the route for their daily activities are increasingly concerned about the economic fallout.

“Our road was already in bad shape, and now the bridge is completely gone. It’s very hard to travel. We’re pleading with the government to repair it,” said Jacob Donyi, a local motorist.

Farmer Liman Sabogor added, “We use this road every day to reach our farms. With the bridges down, we’re cut off from our land and neighboring communities. We need urgent help.”

Another resident, Daari Adams, echoed the community’s frustration: “The road was already in poor condition before the bridges collapsed. We’ve been asking for help for years. Now the situation is even worse.”

As rains continue through the season, residents are urgently calling on authorities for swift intervention to restore access and avoid further economic hardship.
