In a decisive move to reinforce the government’s crackdown on illegal mining—locally known as galamsey—Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed, has directed all security agencies to arrest anyone attempting to interfere with anti-galamsey operations, regardless of their political connections or status.
Speaking at the 17th Regional Commanders’ Conference in Accra on Friday, the Minister addressed Inspector-General of Police Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno and officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), stressing that no disruptions to these operations will be tolerated.
“If anyone contacts you claiming I said an operation should be halted, arrest them,” the Minister instructed. “Even if someone impersonates me, the CID should immediately act and arrest the individual.”
His statement comes amid increasing concerns about political interference in the fight against illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s environment and contaminate vital water bodies.
Mr. Muntaka emphasized that there will be no exemptions or special treatment in enforcing anti-galamsey measures. “I will not send you into the forest only to call you back and ask you to release someone. That will never come from me,” he asserted.
This directive underscores the Ministry of the Interior’s firm commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies in combating illegal mining and upholding accountability, regardless of influence or position.
