Police in the Central Region have intercepted a suspected smuggling operation involving 30 bags of cocoa beans, discovered aboard a Toyota Coaster bus with registration number GR 8247-20.
The vehicle was stopped at the Brimso Police checkpoint at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Monday, July 21. During a routine inspection, officers uncovered the cocoa bags. The driver was unable to present any official documentation confirming the legitimacy of the cargo.
According to DCOP Kofi Adu, the Central Regional Police Commander, the driver — identified as 42-year-old Bernard Owusu Agyemang — claimed he was acting on instructions from an individual named Martin, who directed him to deliver the cocoa to a woman in Mankessim. The driver was unable to provide her full identity, offering only a phone number as a point of contact.
DCOP Adu confirmed that investigations are underway to uncover the broader network behind the smuggling attempt. He emphasized that all individuals found to be involved will face prosecution, as a deterrent against future illegal cocoa trading.
The seized cocoa beans have been handed over to the COCOBOD office in Cape Coast for further inspection and quality assessment. The consignment was received by Mr. Maxwell Ntiamoah, Principal Quality Control Officer.
Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activities related to cocoa smuggling. DCOP Adu assured that all information received will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
