A tragic shooting incident at Nalerigu Senior High School in Ghana’s North East Region has left two male students dead, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising concerns about school security in conflict-prone areas.
The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, July 26, when unknown gunmen entered the school compound and opened fire inside the students’ dormitory. The victims, identified only as Lukman and Gideon, were killed instantly.
Eyewitness accounts and local reports describe the attack as sudden and unprovoked. The motive behind the killings is not yet clear, but preliminary suspicions point to a possible link with the Bawku conflict, a long-standing ethnic dispute that has led to sporadic violence in parts of the region. However, this connection remains unconfirmed by authorities.
Dasmani Fuseini, the Assembly Member for the Denugu Electoral Area and uncle of one of the deceased, confirmed the incident. He noted that the victims' bodies are currently in police custody, pending release to the families for burial arrangements.
The Ghana Police Service has since launched a full-scale investigation into the attack and pledged to pursue those responsible. Officials say security will be stepped up in and around the school, and possibly across the wider region, to prevent further tragedies.
The attack has reignited calls from parents, educators, and civil society groups for increased protection of students, especially in areas affected by ongoing security threats.
This tragic loss of life has left the Nalerigu SHS community—and the country—mourning and demanding answers.
