As England gets ready to face Spain in the final of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, one name stands out among the Lionesses: Michelle Agyemang.
The 19-year-old forward of Ghanaian descent has emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout stars, delivering crucial goals and electrifying performances when England needed them most.
From scoring a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser against Italy to netting a key goal in the quarterfinal comeback against Sweden, Agyemang’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“It means the world to me and I’m so grateful,” Agyemang told ITV. “Three years ago, I was just throwing balls to these girls — now I’m celebrating with them.”
From Ball Girl to Game-Changer
Michelle Agyemang was born in Essex, England, to a Ghanaian family. Though football loyalties in her household were split — her father a Manchester United fan, her brother supporting Chelsea, and her sister backing West Ham — Agyemang was a die-hard Arsenal supporter.
She joined the Arsenal youth setup at the age of six and made her first-team debut at just 16 in a Women’s Super League match against Leicester City. In 2023, she scored her first senior goal in an FA Cup game against Leeds.
Having also played for Watford and Brighton on loan, Agyemang’s time in the Championship and Super League sharpened her abilities. Despite limited minutes at Brighton, she scored three goals in three starts and was named Women’s Young Player of the Season.
A Dream International Debut
Agyemang earned her first England call-up in April 2025, debuting in a Nations League match against Belgium. It took just 41 seconds for her to find the net — an instant introduction to international football.
England lost that game 3–2, but Agyemang's performance was enough to earn a spot in Sarina Wiegman’s Euro 2025 squad.
“Her composure, her first and second touch — that goal was special,” said Wiegman after Agyemang’s debut.
England’s Knockout Hero
In the Euro 2025 quarterfinals, with England on the brink of elimination, Agyemang delivered an 81st-minute equaliser, taking the game to extra time. England went on to win via penalties.
In the semifinal against Italy, England again found themselves trailing. With the clock running out, Agyemang struck in the 96th minute — a cool, double-nutmeg finish that kept their tournament hopes alive. England sealed the win in extra time thanks to a rebound goal from Chloe Kelly.
Admiration from the Squad
Her teammates and coach are in awe of her confidence and maturity:
- Chloe Kelly: “Big Mich is unbelievable. The world is at her feet.”
- Lucy Bronze: “You can see it when she comes on — defenders fear her.”
- Leah Williamson: “She feels inevitable right now.”
- Sarina Wiegman: “At 19, she knows exactly what to do. She’s special.”
As England prepares for today’s Euro 2025 final against Spain, the question remains:
Can Michelle Agyemang, the teenager once on the sidelines, now lead her country to the title?
