Kwabena Nketiah Antwi, a lawyer and a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team in the Ashanti Region, has made an unusual political suggestion to Julius Debrah, the former Chief of Staff under the previous NDC administration. If Debrah intends to take a shot at leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Antwi proposes he consider opening a gym.
Speaking during a political discussion, Antwi acknowledged Debrah’s ongoing efforts to engage with the public—particularly through his Saturday health walks, which many see as a grassroots mobilization strategy. However, Antwi questioned the long-term impact of weekly walks and offered an alternative.
“Honestly, I think starting a gym would be more beneficial than just walking once a week,” Antwi remarked, somewhat humorously. “It promotes sustained health and offers a consistent way to engage with supporters.”
He went on to draw a comparison between Julius Debrah and NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, highlighting the contrast in their political personas. While Debrah, he said, is more associated with elite political circles, Asiedu Nketia—popularly known as “General Mosquito”—is deeply connected to the grassroots base.
“If both of them were to contest for leadership within the party, it would be a tough battle,” Antwi said. “Julius is closely linked with top-level politicians, whereas General Mosquito resonates with everyday members of the party.”
Antwi also referenced past internal rivalries within the NDC, humorously recalling how challengers to the party’s mainstream are sometimes dismissed. “Remember when George Boateng tried to contest John Mahama? They said he was mad. It was Asiedu Nketia who said that. Now, the tables could turn,” he quipped.
