Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of allowing illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—to spiral out of control within just six months of assuming power. According to him, the environmental destruction witnessed under the NDC in that short time frame exceeds what occurred during the NPP's entire eight-year tenure.
Speaking during an interview on Net 2 TV, Kodua described the current situation as alarming, claiming that galamsey operations are now taking place openly—even in the constituency of the President himself. He labeled this as a case of “impunity at the highest levels.”
Kodua stressed the need for collective national action to confront the illegal mining menace and restore environmental integrity. He also pledged that the NPP would continue internal reforms—particularly at the grassroots level—to rebuild credibility and dismantle internal power blocs he described as “mafia structures.”
“The galamsey that has taken place in Ghana over the last six months is more than what happened under the NPP in eight years,” Kodua said. “If we can unite and speak out against these wrongs, the Ghanaian people will be drawn back to our party.”
His remarks come amid growing national concern over the environmental and social impact of illegal mining, which has heavily polluted water bodies and destroyed farmlands in many parts of the country.
