Former Member of Parliament Mavis Hawa Koomson has indicated that she may be present at the upcoming Akwatia by-election, despite a recent assault she endured during the rerun of the Ablekuma North election.
In a recent interview, Koomson emphasized that the incident will not deter her from fulfilling her political responsibilities. Referencing a popular Ghanaian proverb, she said, “If water takes your child, you don’t stop drinking water,” suggesting that adversity should not halt one’s commitment to a cause.
While she has yet to make a final decision, Koomson confirmed that she is giving serious consideration to participating in the Akwatia polls. She reaffirmed her dedication to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and to Ghana’s democratic process.
“I haven’t completely made up my mind yet, but I’m giving it serious thought,” she said. “What happened at Ablekuma North was unfortunate, but it won’t stop me.”
Koomson explained that her presence at the Ablekuma North rerun was necessary due to her role in that specific electoral process, and she felt obligated to be involved despite the risks.
Her statements have reignited discussions on political engagement, election security, and the resilience of women in public leadership.
