Akwapem North Member of Parliament, Sammi Awuku, has delivered a strong critique of the current administration, accusing it of prioritizing image management and public relations over genuine economic relief for Ghanaians.
Speaking during an appearance on Newsroom on Channel One, the former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claimed the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-led government is more concerned with appearances than with addressing the country's pressing economic challenges.
“This government operates on three pillars—PR, optics, and carefully staged performances,” Awuku stated. “They project an illusion of action, but everyday Ghanaians continue to grapple with deepening economic hardship.”
Awuku also cast doubt on the government's recent austerity pronouncements, including a pledge to cut fuel allocations for political appointees. He argued that the measure is largely symbolic and not being seriously implemented.
“The government announced the removal of fuel allocations for its officials, yet if you visit Jubilee House or the Castle in Osu, fuel depots are still fully functioning,” he alleged. “Even individuals with no official mandate are still accessing these resources.”
He went on to highlight a perceived gap between the government's rhetoric and its behavior. “Ghanaians are being told to make sacrifices, but from what we’re seeing, the government isn't leading by example—it’s more like they're wearing an elastic waistband while asking the rest of us to tighten our belts,” he said pointedly.
Awuku’s remarks come amid widespread public concern over inflation, the rising cost of living, and what many see as government extravagance during tough economic times.
