Many Young Couples Marry Without Clear Intentions – Counselor Theresa Wiafe Warns

Marriage counselor Theresa Wiafe has expressed concern over a rising trend among young couples who enter into marriage without a clear understanding of their motivations. Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM, Wiafe revealed that nearly 60% of young couples she counsels are unable to clearly articulate why they want to get married.

According to her, many of these individuals cite superficial or external reasons, such as financial readiness, societal expectations, or pressure from parents. One common misconception she noted is the belief that marriage automatically equates to maturity or responsibility, particularly among men.

“During premarital counseling, we often begin by asking, ‘Why do you want to get married?’” Wiafe said. “Unfortunately, about 60% of the couples don’t have a clear answer. They say things like, ‘I have a stable job,’ or ‘My parents believe it’s time.’ But the assumption that marriage makes a person responsible is simply false.”

Wiafe stressed that marriage should be a conscious and well-thought-out decision, grounded in emotional readiness, mutual commitment, and shared values. She warned that entering into marriage without clear purpose or understanding could result in long-term dissatisfaction and instability.
