Security agencies have arrested a man identified as Francis Asante—also known by the aliases “Swanzy” and “Nana Kwasi”—for issuing threats ahead of the upcoming Akwatia Parliamentary By-election. Asante is believed to be the self-proclaimed Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Delta Force, a controversial vigilante group.
His arrest follows the circulation of a viral video in which he appeared in military-style camouflage, delivering threats of violence. In the video, Asante warned of planned attacks and even threatened that a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could be assassinated during the electoral process. The footage sparked alarm among the general public and political stakeholders, prompting swift action from security services.
According to intelligence reports, Asante was apprehended on the evening of Friday, July 18, 2025, at a hideout in Barekese, a community in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region. Authorities deemed the arrest necessary to preserve peace and security before, during, and after the by-election.
Asante reportedly claimed his threats were a response to what he described as the NPP’s betrayal of Delta Force members. He alleged that the group was instrumental in securing the party's 2016 electoral victory but had since been neglected and marginalized.
Security officials confirmed that, as of 10:00 p.m. on Friday, arrangements were underway to transfer Asante to Accra for formal processing and potential prosecution.
