Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised to establish a regional hospital in the Oti Region, describing the current lack of such a facility as a serious gap in Ghana’s healthcare system.
During a regional tour on Friday, July 23, Mahama underscored the urgent need for equitable healthcare access across all parts of the country.
“Quality healthcare is a basic right, yet the Oti Region remains among the few in Ghana without a regional hospital. This is simply unacceptable,” Mahama stated.
He assured residents that a future National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration under his leadership would move quickly to resolve the issue. Mahama revealed that discussions are already in progress with the Ghana Health Service and international development partners to pave the way for the hospital's construction.
“We are actively engaging stakeholders to build a modern regional hospital here in Oti. It will serve both as a referral centre and an emergency response facility,” he said.
Mahama noted that the proposed hospital would reduce the pressure on facilities in Ho and Tamale by offering specialized services within the region itself.
The hospital will form a central part of a broader healthcare improvement plan under the Universal Primary Healthcare Programme. According to Mahama, the initiative will also include the development of well-equipped health centres and community clinics across all districts in the region.
“The regional hospital will be our flagship facility, but our goal is to ensure that every community in Oti has access to reliable, high-quality healthcare through a network of smaller clinics,” he added.
